Title: Mastiff
Author: Tamora Pierce
Length: 581 pages

The final volume in the Beka Cooper trilogy. And by FAR my favorite. It's probably the longest of Tamora Pierce's books to date (I have all the rest on my bookshelf, but I'm not going to get up from my desk and check their page counts), but I honestly can't think of anything she could have cut. I started reading this on Friday, and finished it today (Sunday). WITH A CONVENTION IN THE MIDDLE. I could not stop reading it. Even while watching the AMV contest recap, I kept picking it up and reading a few more pages during the music videos that bored me. It's that good. I did not expect many of the twists that happened. I did not expect the romantic interest, or the traitor, or names that echo from the Tortall of Alanna's time to play the roles they did. And I can honestly say that this is the first Tamora Pierce book I've read that had me crying at the ending. Good tears, not bad. (Lady Knight had me crying mid-book; those of you who've read it will know what scene I am referring to.) I honestly think Tammy has set herself a new bar with this book, and I can only hope she continues to soar above it.

Verdict: HIGHLY RECOMMENDED.

This was my favorite of the three, too. I did not care for the second one at all. Hm.. A trip to the library may be in my near future to reread Alanna's books. And alllll the rest.
