Well, we just got the ashes back today, and in the process of transferring them from the crematory's urn to the one the family wanted, I got to read all the notes on the direction sheet. Including the original request, and then the notation that not only was the person's head pre-shaven, they also had no chest hair for the crematory staff to clip for the family. Which means that (1) the family was actually serious about the request, (2) the crematory staff actually checked for chest hair, and (3) fortunately for all involved, the family did not in fact escalate things to asking for other short and curlies, as some of you speculated.
(For those who have a squick factor about it, the ashes come plastic bagged inside the crematory's urn, and I put that put inside a second plastic bag inside the urn the family chooses. So they're not loose and I'm not breathing them in or getting them all over my hands or anything.)
