On Actual Finds and Theoretical Losses

sakon76Most weekends, if there are interesting ones listed in the Pennysaver (my husband's employer, though he doesn't work for the print division), I go to estate sales. This weekend was no exception and I came away with a few canning jars, a few new pots for the patio, a couple vintage linens to study and use, a couple patterns/pattern books to learn from. Dribs and drabs of this and that, really. For the most part I share with my mother, who has similar tastes to myself, offering her the pick of my little scores.
My most amusing find this weekend was a Pennysaver from 1977, the year my husband was born. I grabbed it to amuse him and provide watercooler talk at his place of employment. I do end up wondering, though, why someone kept it for so many years. ^_^;;
Of interest to me was an overheard conversation at one of the sales. Usually there's a case of jewelry right by the cashier, except at this sale there wasn't. One of the ladies running the sale said that the person (presumably deceased, though sometimes these are massive downsizing &/or moving to care facility sales) had been robbed, and though they caught the young men who did it, the only pieces of jewelry she had been able to reclaim were the two pieces engraved with her children's names.
It got me thinking. If our home was ever robbed, I would be pissed, of course, because that's how I react to such things. And if they found my jewelry, there would be a couple pieces I would hate to lose--a child's set given to me by my great-grandmother and a couple pieces of Swedish and Norwegian silver from my grandmother--but nothing truly worth much. Sentimental value rather than financial. Almost everything I have is costume jewelry. The only pieces I have which might be worth much, in fact, are my engagement and wedding rings, which haven't left my hands since the day I got married.
I'd possibly be more upset about losing my computer, because it has my writing stuff on it and that represents a lot of work.
