Title: Fortune's Fool
Author: Mercedes Lackey
Length: 395 pages

Yes, I read 395 pages in a day. This is one of Lackey's books in her "500 Kingdoms" series, which is pretty much a universe that goes under "all the laws of fairytales are real." Which is a FASCINATING mental exercise, if you think about it. This one (I know there are others before and after it) is pretty much The Little Mermaid meets Russian Fairytales. With a few others mixed in... there's a kitsune and a djinn, among others. And while in a few places it gets irksome (erm, HOW many gifts is she lading out to her main two characters?!), confused (ten girls in the castle; how, exactly, am I to keep all their names straight?), and I frankly think "The Tradition" is a stupid name to give to the fairytale force, overall it works quite well. Not a deep deep read, but a fun one of two admittedly powerful individuals trying to get themselves out of trouble. Much like Miles Vorkosigan in that regard, actually, but Miles is an impossibly clever character.

Verdict: recommended.
