Have managed to find a community garden. It's about a mile from where I work, seems to still be in operation, and from what I saw, has open/fallow areas. Now I just need to manage to go there when someone's actually there and ask them how/where I sign up. The garden itself had a padlock on it (but a sign saying they're not closing; even though the city hopes to eventually sell the property, they realize they're not likely to do so soon with the economic downturn) so I'm guessing there are either limited gardening hours, or everyone who has a plot gets a key.

Hey, good luck with this.

I thought of another source if this doesn't work out. I live in Colorado, so it might be different than Cali, but most of the elementary schools around here have a community garden somewhere on their property and they love to rent the spaces out to neighbors. Ours costs $10/month to cover the water bills. The other school close by has a HUGE community garden with 150 plots (it's one of the biggest). This might be a source for you.

You would kick me if I were there: we have two big community garden spaces 1/2 block and one block from us, plus another one half a mile away.

Would those be where those plants you were telling me about will be going? :)

Sadly, we haven't the time to go out to the gardens, plus we want the girls to know about the rewards of organic farming. Balcony!
