Well, as it is that day, I thought I should pull my head out of my rear end and actually take some time to think about what I'm thankful for.

I'm thankful for my health, which is generally good and the one thing which does not work with me is controllable through modern drugs. Despite all the things I dislike about living in an industrial society, I have to say modern medicine rocks.

I am thankful for my family--meaning my wonderful, beloved husband, my parents, my sister, my extended family of aunts and uncles and cousins, my adopted family of friends, and my cats, past and present--sweet, dumb Paris, sweet, dumb Jack, and sweet wee Ash who was only mine briefly but I am so glad he was. I'm thankful that my grandmother's passing was easy and expected, and that when my well-meaning coworkers try to give me their condolences and I say I don't want to talk about it, they actually do listen.

I'm thankful that I have enough food to eat, clothing to wear, and a home in which to shelter from the elements. I'm thankful for my job, which makes these things possible. I'm also thankful that I have leisure time to pursue hobbies like writing, reading, watching things, sewing, cooking, and gardening. I'm probably even grateful that I have the ability to consider most of these hobbies rather than necessities. I'm thankful that between my wonderful husband and myself we have enough income to not only save to buy a house someday, but to do things like fly to England for Christmas with his family.

I'm thankful to have been born and grow up in a country which in principle does not discriminate against me or allow discrimination against me because of my gender or beliefs. I'm not always pleased with the way things go, but then, this is real life, screwed up as it may be.

There are probably many more things for which I am thankful, but these are the basics, the ones I count under varying sections of "life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness." Though not all my friends here are American, and thus do not celebrate this holiday, I would yet like to ask--what are you all thankful for?
