This is *Hikaru*. He has a subscription to Shounen Jump. I can't picture him using anything else as his educational material. Well--maybe he might have a vampire movie in his video tapes, but manga is so much more convenient. I'm amused that Akira apparently has been separated just enough from pop culture that he doesn't know what a vampire is.
As to the atmosphere... I think neither humorous nor angsty, but somewhere else; where that "else" is I haven't yet discovered. Realism, perhaps? Had a lovely long chat with my sister (a nurse) about the post-mortem body as a part of trying to define the rules of vampirism for this story. Since Hikaru's going to be discovering them blind, I get to avoid the temptation of an info-dump but also have to be ready for wherever the story decides it wants to go.
