So I'd gotten the bobbin winder assembly off the machine and soaked it in evaporust, and magically all the brown on the screw bits and such is gone. But there was still a bit of grime left on all the black, so I put just a dab of dishwashing liquid on the soft side of the scrubby.

Mere contact with it turned all the goldwork silver.

It's a $25 machine. It's my learning process. There are literally millions more of this model floating around.

I'm still pissed at myself.
