We now have a new patio door and mostly new windows. I say mostly because we decided not to replace (1) the two bathroom windows; they're already newish and small, and (2) the garage window, which is also newish, though not small. I also say mostly because the factory sent the wrong window for one of the back bedroom windows, so they're reordering that and will hopefully return to install the correct window within the week.
The new windows look quite posh. Now I need to sand and paint the sills to match!
And while the workmen were taking over most rooms of the house in a sequential rotating sequence, I sat out of the way in the dining room, working with the Singer 28. People in the vintage sewing machines community apparently tend to give their sewing machines names. My main (modern) machine is Lilo II. The serger I haven't worked with enough to find out its name yet. I'm pondering naming the 28 "Margaret" after Wonderful Husband's Nan, whose machine it was. Maybe "Maggie" for short? (Thinking the TFs chara, not the Simpsons one.)
But anyway, I sat and sewed and cut and ironed and have done up two 18" quilt squares and feel I've got a lot of the machine's habits worked out. Also, have got the tension correct, which was giving me grief this morning. Have to say, I now appreciate the advantage of the bobbin winders on electric machines a bit more! I also dragged out Little Town on the Prairie and These Happy Golden Years and reread Laura's experiences with sewing machines. They make more sense to me now, and I have to admit I was sitting there reading wondering how accurately one could recreate her and her sister's dresses from the descriptions....
There's a Costume Con Historical Masquerade group somewhere in that thought.
