How Doth My Garden Grow
Mar. 12th, 2010 07:44 pmSo my seed orders are starting to trickle in. Baker Creek Heirloom Seeds included a free packet of Henderson's Pink Ponderosa tomato seeds. Territorial Seeds included a free packet of Nantes carrots labelled with a suggestion to plant a row for the homeless and donate the carrots to a needy shelter or soup kitchen. And meantime the tomato seeds I've planted have started sprouting at various rates. All of the Black Krim are up, for instance, but not yet any of the Persimmon. Hopefully the latter are just dragging their heels; the other option is that I screwed up on seed saving last year.
I've also got my soil test results back. The general consensus seems to be that the raised beds we put in last year and the beds around the edge of the yard could do with their pHs coming down some; the raised beds and the beds against the house need more nitrogen; and perhaps most relievingly, the beds at the edge of the yard, which are bordered by railroad ties so old they're actually rotting so they may well be original to the house, do not contain worrying levels of heavy metals, so I can safely plant some herbs and vegetables in them if I want.
