Huh. Not as advertised.
Aug. 10th, 2009 09:04 pmThe fruit of the melon plants I started and gave my parents earlier this year are finally starting to ripen. They're Vanilla Ice melons, which is a hybrid that Burpee's no longer offers. Wonderful Husband and I split one for dessert tonight (they're about 5" in diameter, not those great hulking type melons you get in the shops). It was delicious, tasty and sweet. And utterly NOT what was described on the packet! I fail to see how gold skin and green flesh matches with "the rare combination of white flesh and pale pink seed cavity." Ah well. It's tasty nonetheless and even if it is a hybrid, and thus I can't save seeds from it and get the same thing next year, I do have more seeds left in the packet for growing it again in 2010. I think I'm hooked on this smaller melon idea... it's so convenient to not have to quarter them and wrap the remaining pieces in plastic wrap. Saving the environment through smaller melons!
