Still Alive
Aug. 6th, 2009 09:30 amAfter I survived Costume College last weekend, this weekend my inlaws are arriving from the UK. Thus the continued lack of much online presence. The past several evenings have been spent moving boxes back out to the garage (Wonderful Husband), spackling baseboards and crown moulding (both of us), smoothing said spackle (him), tending the gardens (me), and cleaning up the side yard (me). That last one has taken several hours on each of two evenings, in fact, and I hope I can finish it off tonight. There's stacks of bricks and blocks, ornamental rocks, whatever pots I'm not using at the moment, the unfinished compost bin, the roll of wiring I'm hoping to use for potato plant bins next year, the remains of the hay bale, a stack of tiles, long and high weeds to pull, dirt and leaves and twigs and wisps to sweep, dribs and drabs and chunks of cement to pile into buckets to eventually make their way into the trash a little at a time so the city doesn't bitch about it....
Generally, though, things are starting to look in shape from their much-needed cleaning. I was somewhat amused last night when Mike (our handyman), who was over to finish the drywalling of the garage, commented that we had a lot of garden space going. From my point of view, it's currently about 260 square feet, counting the "flower beds" along the front and back of the house that I am not, in fact, currently using for flowers, but not counting the pots and pots and pots I have of various herbs. That, to me, is not a lot. There are a lot of crops I'd like to try and grow that I currently don't have bedspace for. Wonderful Husband, however, agreed with Mike, pointing out that it takes me about an hour to water it all. ...I reluctantly concede the point, though I counter that a good portion of that is having to soak the beds where I've been starting seeds. I suspect that one of our winter projects this year will be figuring out how to plumb things in the side yard such that we can rely on soaker hoses next year.
