Another five hundred words over my quota, and I'm pleased at getting to character background that I've been looking forward toward getting to write. I'm working off a lot of myths and fairy tales in this story. Each of my four mains has a particular one associated with them, and there are some that just pop up in the course of the story, like Robin Hood and tengu and I'm hoping I can get Paul Bunyan in here somewhere. I think on my next trip to the library I should see what they have in their myths and folktales section. Might be interesting. So this is five pages (single-spaced) in twelve point font in two days. Ten pages in manuscript form. Go me.

Have finished Mansfield Park. I think I may like it best of Jane Austen's works so far, better even than the snarky self-referentiality of Northanger Abbey. For once it felt like I got to spend a long enough time in the world to garner a feeling of what may be called "good manners" or "moral sensibility." As, expected, of course, guy #2 totally blew it in the last forty pages so the heroine, justified in refusing him, ends up with guy #1. And, hey, at points she almost showed signs of having a backbone! And everybody ends up getting what they deserve, the end.

I'm sitting here waiting for my nails to dry so that I can apply topcoat and then take off my shoes and socks and paint my toenails as well. (This may not all occur in that order.) I usually don't paint my nails as paint always chips so easily and then it doesn't look nice. Tonight, however, is my ten-year high school reunion and the paperwork specifies "cocktail attire," so for me that means the red dress and heels and painting my face and nails. I am normally very low maintenance.... I'm getting kind of wound up about this as I don't know who's going, I haven't seen almost anyone from my class *for* ten years... but if I don't go now, I will never go to any of the rest. And I've already paid the $166 for Wonderful Husband and myself, so I have to go. It will probably all turn out fine....

Me: Everything I know about chess, I learned from Miyuki-chan in Wonderland: "I've never seen sexy chess pieces before."

Wonderful Husband: When we've collected all the Clamp chess pieces, I'll teach you.
