You know you're married to your dictionary when you've memorized radical numbers. (Tree? Radical #75, my good man.)

I also seem to have gotten distressingly good (for a gaikokujin) at writing kanji sometime in the last five years.

They used to make you memorize radicals in school -- would give tests on it and everything. I don't know why they bothered. Anyone who has to look things up with any regularity will memorize the radical numbers anyway. Eventually there comes a point where you and your dictionary achieve a sort of communion, where all you have to do is envision the radical number and the stroke count, and *whoomp* the dictionary falls open to there or thereabouts.

(And anyone who, upon reading that last sentence says I'm a freak has not studied enough Japanese. Trust me on this one.)
