Title: Shades of Milk and Honey
Author: Mary Robinette Kowal
Length: 302 pages

I originally ran into a recommendation for this book on [livejournal.com profile] jimhines's blog, which intrigued me. A Regency romance ala Jane Austen set in a world which has illusion magic? But I set the recommendation to the wayside until I found posts on the Oregon Regency Society blog which showed the author was an active member. Who wore the clothes and at events hand-wrote her novels using ink and quill. My jaw kind of dropped at that. I'm so spoiled by computers that I find it hard to remember what writing stories longhand was like. Let alone using period-correct techniques.

I admire writers who do their research. It makes it a hella lot less likely I'll end up with the jangle of discord that throws me out of the book.

So I checked this out of the library this afternoon, and started reading it. Now, I'm a fast reader, but 300+ pages in one day, while taking care of a toddler, weeding, etc., is not the usual for me. It may help that I've read all of Jane Austen's work, but mainly my impression of this book was how smoothly it went down. Granted, I pegged pretty early on who the villain and who the eventual love interest were, but there were also sufficient red herrings to make me wonder about my guesses.

There are at least three more books in this series. I'll be reading them. I'll also be waving this at my husband.

Verdict: Recommended, especially if you like the works of Jane Austen.

ETA: Wonderful Husband has started on the book, and made a comment about it being like Pride and Prejudice fanfiction. Which is a point I grant. But, I should note, he is continuing to read it.. And he's not nearly the reader I am.
