Tension problems are the first thing that comes to mind. Is the machine threaded correctly? Are the upper thread tension disks putting tension on the thread? Or, more likely the cause, is the bobbin threaded correctly? I would double-check any diagrams in your manual just to be sure it's not something like spooling off the bobbin in the wrong direction or something. Or just not going through the bobbin tensioner, maybe.
