Title: Fairest
Author: Gail Carson Levine
Length: 326 pages

I had read Ella Enchanted a few years ago, but sadly, I wasn't. Enchanted, that is. So when I saw this book at the library I decided to give the author and the universe a try. Where EE was a redo of the Cinderella story, Fairest is a redo of Snow White. And it suits my taste better than EE did. I liked the theme of "beauty is in how you look at yourself." I liked that Aza, the Snow White character, was a big girl: tall and sturdy. What irked me, though, were her constant repetitions of the fact that she was ugly without the author giving a baseline comparison of what was considered to be beautiful in the culture around her.

Verdict: overall recommended. Readers could do a lot worse.

I have to agree that Fairest was better than Ella Enchanted, and you came up with a much better line of reasoning than I did when I was trying to explain why.
