Title: The Rose Rent
Author: Ellis Peters
Length: 190 pages
I ended up looking up Brother Cadfael on Wikipedia the other day and found myself somewhat interested in at least trying out the book series based on the entry and my Wonderful Husband's hazy recollection of the subsequent TV series as "kind of like Murder, She Wrote." So on my next trip to the library I found the four volumes (out of twenty) they had and picked out the earliest one in the series. Which happens to be the twelfth.
The prose style is nice, descriptive without being overwhelming. I get a good sense of the time and place if somewhat less of the physicality of the setting. The murder mystery is sufficiently complex and has enough twists and turns that I could not, in fact, call whodunnit, though I wonder if that will be easier in future volumes. The romance subplot is also quite nicely worked and believable.
Verdict: Recommended. I'll likely be checking out more of the series from the library....
