Title: The Stepsister Scheme
Author: Jim C. Hines
Length: 344 pages
I requested this from the library since vague word of mouth was that it was good.
Vague word of mouth apparently doesn't take my tastes into account.
Basically, this is "take Disney princesses and mishmash with Charlie's Angels." I give it props for going back to the original, much nastier versions of the fairytales, and for having been densely plotted out. My problem with it is that it's very "male" writing. There's no insight into the thoughts and feelings of the characters. It's all action. Oh, and obligatory (though, I admit, understandable given the character's fairy tale origin) clandestine lesbian longings. I ended the story with the characters feeling as much strangers to me as they were at the beginning. I like stories where I actually feel like I met someone and talked with them, rather than just seeing them walk past on the street.
Verdict: Not really recommended as a good read, though for some reason I think
racerxmachina would get a kick of what Hines has done with the fairy tales.
